How to Troubleshoot Common SFTP Connection Errors

When connecting to your environment via SFTP, you may occasionally encounter issues preventing a successful connection. These connection errors can arise for several reasons, such as incorrect login credentials, network issues, or access restrictions, to mention some. In this guide, we’ll walk you through troubleshooting some of the most common SFTP connectivity issues and provide solutions to fix them. Let’s dive in!

Connection Timeout Error

Issue: Your SFTP client displays an error with the “Connection Timed Out” message.

Steps to Resolve:

  1. Check Server Address and Port:
    • Ensure you are using the correct server address and port number. For Servebolt, the port should be set to 22.
  2. Verify Internet Connection:
    • Confirm that your internet connection is stable and operational.
  3. Check Environment Status:
    • Ensure that the environment or Bolt is online and reachable. You can do this by pinging your environment or your Host IP. You can also check our status page.

Incorrect Configuration or Credentials

Problem: You see errors due to incorrect protocol, port, username, or password settings.

Steps to Resolve:

  1. Select SFTP Protocol:
    • Ensure that your SFTP client is set to use the SFTP protocol. For example, in Filezilla, select SFTP when configuring a new site.
  2. Verify Port:
    • Check that the port is set to 22 in your SFTP client.
  3. Double-Check Credentials:
    • Re-enter your username and password to ensure they are correct.
  4. Check SSH/SFTP Access:

Too Many Failed Login Attempts

Problem: You are locked out due to too many failed login attempts.

Steps to Resolve:

  1. Wait for Lockout Period:
    • If you reach 10 failed login attempts, wait 10 minutes.
    • If you reach 30 failed login attempts within an hour, the lockout can last up to an hour.
  2. Reset SFTP Password:
    • If necessary, reset your SFTP password in the Admin Panel. Recheck all settings, including protocol, port, hostname, username, and password.
